Editor's Note
It stands in Bağbaşı Village in the Tortum district. Also known as the Church of the Virgin Mary, the structure was commissioned by the Bagratid king David III between 976 and 1001. Converted into a mosque in the 19th century, it took the name Taş Cami (Stone Mosque). The building was created by combining the closed Greek-cross plan with the basilica plan. The reliefs inside feature figures such as lions, bulls, eagles and griffins. The walls of the interior, and especially the apse, are also decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from the Gospels and portraying Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
