Editor's Note
Ağcakale (Engüzek Castle), 3 km from the centre of Uzundere district, sits atop a steep, tall and strikingly shaped crag that rises like a screw-drill from the bank of the stream along the Uzundere–Tortum highway. This well-preserved small castle of typical architecture lies within the bounds of Dikyar Village in Uzundere district. It is thought to have been built by Turkish beys who ruled the area as a feudal lordship in the Middle Ages. There is no historic relief or inscription at the castle, and no firm information exists about its date. Part of the inner-castle walls still stands.
