Editor's Note
Halit Street (the Jewish Street) is an important part of Tokat's more than nine centuries of urban history. The physical growth of the urban fabric began around the castle in the Roman period, expanded under the Danishmendids, and took its present form in the Seljuk and Ottoman eras. The street's name as the "Jewish Street" stems from the area's historic social fabric. According to records from the 1840s, a Jewish community of around 400 people, who lived by trade and craftsmanship, resided in the "Halid" neighborhood, one of their main settlement areas.
