The Orhan Soup Kitchen (imaret) was built in 1325 by Orhan Gazi. The purpose of the institution was to distribute food to the needy who lived outside the city walls, to clothe the poor, to treat the sick, and to provide shelter to travelers. In this respect it is one of the oldest and most meaningful examples of the social welfare institutions of the early Ottoman period. In August 2025, the survey, restitution, and reconstruction project process for the soup kitchen was completed and approved after four long, intensive, and demanding years of work. This process marked the 700th anniversary of the soup kitchen's construction.
