Editor's Note
Andronikos Palaiologos, the eldest son of Emperor John, and Prince Savci Bey took action in early May 1373. Savci Bey proclaimed himself sultan in Bursa, and Andronikos proclaimed himself emperor in Istanbul. According to Byzantine sources, both were defeated in battle at Pikridion on the Bosphorus on 25 May 1373; Andronikos surrendered to his father (on 30 May), while Savci Bey fled to Thrace and took refuge in the fortress of Didymoteicho, holding out there until 7 September (Dolger, [1961], pp. 329-332). The Ottoman account differs: according to it, when Savci Bey revolted in Bursa, Murad I was in Edirne.
