Editor's Note
Lopadion was a fortress in the northwest of Asia Minor, on the Rhyndakos River (Orhaneli Stream), about 20 km south of the Sea of Marmara. It owed its importance to the bridge carrying the main highway eastward from Kyzikos. It first appears in the letters of Theodore of Stoudios as the site of a xenodocheion (a hospice for travellers). A strategic point and an important market town, Lopadion was the scene of clashes between Alexios I Komnenos and the Turks. It rose to prominence in 1130 when John II Komnenos built a strong fortress there as a base for his campaigns in Asia Minor.
