MUHAMMED SAMÎ ERZİNCÂNÎ was born in 1842 in the village of Selüke (Yeşilçay) in Erzincan. His father was Kırtılzâde İbrahim Efendi. He received his first lessons from Hâce Mustafa Fehmi Efendi, a successor of Muhammed Vehbi Hayât. He then went to Istanbul and studied at the Fatih Medrese. Receiving his license (icâzet), he became a professor (müderris). While teaching in the Hınıs district of Erzurum, he left his official post in 1882, went to Nörşin (Güroymak), and took Nakşi instruction from Abdurrahman-i Tâği.
