Editor's Note
No mosque survives in the center of Erzincan province from the Ottoman period to the present day. The İzzet Paşa Mosque, too, was badly damaged in the great Erzincan earthquakes and finally collapsed in the 1939 earthquake. The city's present-day settlement took shape after the 1939 earthquake. The İzzet Paşa Mosque is one of the examples in which late-period Western influences were applied in the provinces. Archival records concerning the mosque's patron and the structure's official decree (ilam) exist. The architect or master builder of the mosque is unknown. Moreover, a construction inscription survives on the bathhouse in the provincial center built by İzzet Paşa, the mosque's patron.
