Editor's Note
He was born in 1520 in the Zile district of Tokat. He was the son of Ebü'l-Berekât Muhammed Efendi, who had migrated from Khorasan to Zile and studied under the first Halveti sheikhs active in Anatolia. His name was Ahmed, and because of his dark complexion he was known as Kara Şems. He is one of the famous "Three Şems" of Islamic history (Şems-i Tebrizî, Akşemseddin, and Şems-i Sivasî). He was also known by the name Şems-i Sânî, the Second Şems. He pursued his early education in Zile and Tokat, completed his medrese studies at the Sahn-ı Senân Medreses in Istanbul, and returned to Zile. At the invitation of Hasan Paşa, the Governor of Sivas, he founded a dervish lodge alongside his post at the Meydan Mosque in Sivas.
