Editor's Note
During landscaping work carried out in Ataturk Park in 2007, the remains of a structure were found. According to the results of an excavation conducted by the Balikesir Museum Directorate, these church remains were dated to the late 19th century. Many researchers have identified the city of Balikesir with Hadrianotherai, a Late Roman/Early Byzantine city; F. W. Hasluck even wrote that this city should be sought in the area around the present stadium. In 1942, during the laying out of some flower beds while Ataturk Park was being built, certain archaeological remains were encountered.
