Editor's Note
HMS Ocean was a Canopus-class pre-dreadnought battleship of the Royal Navy. Laid down in late 1897, launched in July 1898 and commissioned in February 1900, the Canopus-class ships were smaller and faster than the preceding Majestics while keeping the same four 12-inch guns, and carried thinner but more effective Krupp steel armour. Ocean first served with the Mediterranean Fleet and was sent to China after the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion.
