Editor's Note
In Greek the name means "the swarming crowd." The city's first location was near the village of Calti, but it was later moved a little further south to a hill closer to the sea, founding the city of New Gargara. The remains of New Gargara lie on Zindan Hill, about 1 km southwest of Arikli village. The city takes its name from the Gargaros summit on the sacred Mount Ida. Strabo describes it as a sparsely populated city founded by Aeolian settlers who came from Assos, adding that the distance between the city and Assos was one hundred and twenty stadia.
