Editor's Note
The Kütahya Kapan Han was built between 1505 and 1511 by Karagöz Ahmet Pasha, Governor of the Anatolian Province. In his Seyahatname, Evliya Çelebi drew attention to the intensity of trade in Kütahya and to the Kapan Han's iron-gated, "fortress-like" structure. The two-storey han comprised a total of 77 rooms, but only its inscribed cut-stone gate has survived to the present day. The area where the han stood is today known as "Kapanaltı".
