Editor's Note
The Sergis Monastery lies to the east of Kayseri, in the Derevenk Valley, which runs northwest to southeast through the Talas district. This valley extends south from Tavlusun to Zincidere and was formed by the erosion of the Karasu Stream. Numerous man-made caves line the two slopes along the northern part of the valley. The name 'Derevenk' actually derives from the Armenian 'Derevank,' a combination of 'dere' (stream) and 'vank,' the Armenian word for 'monastery.' The '-venk' element in the name Derevenk thus points to the Armenian monastery in the valley.
