This tomb holds Hürrem Sultan, known in Europe as Roxelana, the legal wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, mother of Selim II and the first haseki sultan of the Ottoman Empire. One of the most powerful women in Ottoman history, she began the era known as the Sultanate of Women.
