The Alaaddin Mosque in the centre of Avanos was built in 1202; the Ottoman-Turkish inscription recording this has been stolen. The mosque was built in the Seljuk period and was later enlarged in the Ottoman period with the addition of certain sections. The main body of the building is of rubble stone, while its courtyard is of finely dressed cut stone. The entrance is through a depressed-arched doorway set within a domed, four-columned baldachin-style section. The Alaaddin Mosque in Avanos, Nevşehir, was commissioned by the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat I in 1202 and is the earliest known mosque in Avanos.
