Kef Castle is located within the boundaries of Bitlis province, 3 km north of the Adilcevaz district. The city was built on a hill of volcanic rock formed by nearby Mount Suphan, and it is approached from the north. Cuneiform documents show that it was built by Rusa, son of Argishti. Scholarly work on Kef Castle was carried out by Ogun and Bilgic between 1964 and 1972, bringing the palace and its surroundings in particular to the attention of the scholarly world. The city's citadel spreads over an area of about 3 hectares.
