Editor's Note
The Mehmet Ali Bey Mosque was built in AH 1307 / AD 1889. Rectangular in plan, the mosque is covered by a dome. The portico on the north side has a flat ceiling carried by six columns; four of these stand free while two are embedded in the side walls. The columns have acanthus-leaf capitals, and the rounded arches springing from them form the portico of the entrance porch. The single-balcony minaret on the northwest facade was added to the mosque in 1959. Finely cut stone was used as the building material.
