Story

The Kars Cheese Museum is a cultural treasure that bears witness to one of Anatolia's most famous cheese-making regions. Telling the story of Kars Gruyère, shaped throughout history by the skill of master craftsmen, the museum offers visitors interactive exhibits that let them discover traditional cheese-making techniques. Its collection includes tools, documents, and photographic archives related to cheese production from ancient times to the present, laying bare a cheese culture that has continued in the region since the Ottoman era. The world-famous Kars Gruyère is among the oldest cheese varieties in Anatolia and is protected under a UNESCO Geographical Indication. Among the exhibits, cross-sections of yellow-cream cheese and antique metal molds stand out in wooden display cases bathed in soft natural light. The most interesting section of the museum is the period documents showing 150-year-old Gruyère production regulations. During your visit, you can taste various kinds of cheese in the small sales area adjoining the museum and buy products from local producers.
