Editor's Note
The monastery's foundation dates back to the early 11th century, to the period of the Moks Artsruni principality. The date carved into the church's walnut-wood door is 1041. The monastery's name appears in a 1421 manuscript, which records that two Ethiopian monks were martyred at Khizan and were to be buried there. In the 19th century the monastery was commonly known as 'Yotn Khoran' (Seven Altars), in reference to the number of altars in the church and its narthex. The building remained in use until the events of 1915.
