Kızıl Mescit

Editor's Note

The Kızıl Mescit (Red Mosque) is in fact a structure converted from a church into a mosque. Although exactly when it was built is not known, its two different inscriptions show that it was repaired in 1507 and 1863. The prayer hall is divided into three naves by three columns set perpendicular to the mihrab. Six cylindrical marble columns divide the space into twelve sections, joined to one another and to the outer walls by pointed arches.
