The Surp Hovhannes Church was built at the start of the 14th century, in 1450, on the site of a church first recorded under the name Surp Hovhannes. Supported by two rows of three columns each, it had an octagonal dome drum and a pyramidal dome, was probably of inscribed-cross plan with three apses, and was also dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Surp Stepanos. The church was completely restored between 1692 and 1694, and its dome drum was renewed in 1850. Home to many graves, it has, in front of the choir, the tombs of the great abbots Parsegh (d. 1615) and Vartan (d. ...).
