There are differing views about when the Van Ulu Mosque (Great Mosque) was built. According to some, the mosque was erected during the Ahlatshah period, in the reign of either Sökmen I (1100–1112) or Sökmen II (1128–1185). However, based on the excavations the art historian Aslanapa carried out between 1970 and 1972 and on his assessment of the decorative style, the building may instead date to the early years of the rule of the Karakoyunlu sultan Kara Yusuf (1389–1400). Both possibilities remain current among scholars, and the exact date of construction is not known with certainty.
