Editor's Note
The Surp Hovhannes Mıgırdiç Monastery, also known as the Surp Garabed Monastery, was probably built in the 10th or 11th century. It stands in the Hormez hamlet of Yelkenli village near Tatvan, northeast of the like-named settlement in the Armenians' Yerevark region, on the southern shore of Lake Van, atop a natural terrace overlooking the lake. At the end of a manuscript book, in a section containing the author's memoirs, it is stated that the monastery was founded by a man named Vasil who lived in Van Castle during the Ardzruni or Byzantine period.
