The Grand Mosque, situated within the city walls, took its present form through the repairs and additions it underwent in various periods. The structure, consisting of two separate sections, comprises the main part with an iwan and an inner courtyard, and a second annex to the north. In the building, the dome before the mihrab, the iwan adjoining it, and the arcaded inner courtyard in front of it form the basis of the plan. Both in its plan and in its brick material, this structure is directly an extension of the Great Seljuks' mosque-building technique in Iran. Two different materials, stone and brick, were used in its construction.
