Editor's Note
The Maden Bridge was built over the Maden Stream, one of the two main tributaries of the Tigris River. Constructed mainly of broken limestone and rubble stone, the bridge has two arches: a small pointed one to the east (7.6 m span, 5 m high) and a large one to the west (13.4 m span, 12 m high). A small stone gargoyle is set into the spandrel wall between the two arches on the downstream side. Although the bridge piers rest on bedrock, the structure has undergone repairs over time. Its most extensive restoration took place in 1934, when the large arch was rebuilt.
