Editor's Note
This is one of the 32 clock towers built to mark the 25th year of the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II. It was built in 1899. Since the inscription that stood above the door of the clock tower has been lost, information about it is obtained from the archives of the Servet-i Fünun newspaper published at the time. It was built under the leadership of the governor (mutasarrıf) Hayri Bey, with financial support given by the public as well. Built in the garden of the Maden Government House, the clock tower stands at a point commanding the district. Slag stone, a rarely seen and difficult-to-work material, was used in its construction.
