In the Byzantine period, Develi had the character of a fortress-town settlement called a "castron." The defining feature of this settlement type is its location on steep, high terrain and the fact that the settlement was largely surrounded by walls. Part of the walls encircling Develi Castle may date from antiquity, or they may have been rebuilt during the Byzantine period. Investigations carried out by Restle and Herbert Hunger in Develi village revealed that apse columns and spolia examples from the Byzantine period can be found in the area.
