Editor's Note
The Surp Astvatsatsin Monastery is a structure mentioned in documents from the early 16th century onward and known as an important religious center in Tomarza. The monastery's earliest record appears in a colophon of 1516. In the 1570s and 1580s, through the efforts of Bishop Astuacatur of Taron, the region became a cultural focus, and during this period the monastery served as the seat of a bishopric covering Tomarza and the surrounding villages. From 1784 to 1915 the monastery was run by abbots, and toward the end of the 19th century a boarding school was also opened within it.
