Editor's Note
It is in the Yeni Mecidiye neighbourhood of the town of Alaçatı. It has three naves and a basilical plan. Having collapsed down to its load-bearing system, the building is in a fairly ruined state. The northern nave can be seen more clearly than the others. In the Ottoman period Alacaat was established as a yaya-müsellem village, on the site of Karaköy a few kilometres east of present-day Alaçatı. According to the detailed tax register of the Sığla Sancağı dated 1575, Alacaat had 103 taxpayers. Around 1830, Hacı Memiş Ağa, the notable of the region, invited the Greek population of Chios, impoverished by earthquakes, to settle in Alacaat.
