Editor's Note
There are differing accounts of the construction date of the Diyarbakir Synagogue. According to one source, the building was constructed in 1840. According to another, the synagogue was built thanks to a donation of one hundred pounds sterling made by Sir Moses Montefiore to the Jewish community of Diyarbakir in 1881. The synagogue had columns of black stone and a slender dome. The surrounding area was filled with earthen huts and wretched houses crammed into a few square meters, where four or five families lived stacked together with their women, men, elderly, and children. The synagogue stood among these houses.
