Story
Tucked into a quiet corner of Fatih, the Mithat Pasha Monument recalls one of the great turning points of the Ottoman Empire. Mithat Pasha (1822-1883) was one of the most influential figures of the Tanzimat reforms and the architect of the first Ottoman Constitution, proclaimed in 1876, which earned him the title of the Constitution Pasha. The monument rises with the elegant lines of classical Istanbul architecture while reflecting the modern sculptural sensibility of the industrial age that was then dawning. Mithat Pasha's most enduring achievement was the provincial system, which reorganized the empire's administrative divisions according to modern principles and strengthened central authority. As an interesting historical note, although his constitutional draft was annulled soon after, it laid the groundwork for the constitutional movement.
