Fertek Hamamı

Editor's Note

This is a now-disused, ruined bathhouse, completed in 1852-1853 and commissioned by Tursucuoglu Stilianos, one of the Karamanli Greeks of Fertek, from the Greek master builder Iosif Kalfa. Through a door on the east one enters the first section of the bathhouse, the cooling-down or changing area. This space has a square plan, with a dome reached by squinches on the inside and an octagonal transition on the outside. At the center of the dome is a lantern. Inside are the changing areas and a small pool in the middle. The floor is paved with marble and basalt. From here a door leads to the warm room.
