Editor's Note
BARIS-FARI: The ruins identified with the site of modern Isparta are almost entirely gone. Baris, known to have stood at the head of the springs feeding the Cestrus (Aksu) River, is thought to be the origin of the present-day name Isparta. In 1948, L. Robert showed that this ancient city lay at Fari, near the town of Kılıç in Keçiborlu. Minting coins from the Hellenistic age onward, the city continued to do so until the end of the Roman period. Another view on the origin of the name Isparta focuses on the name Sporda, which appears in a passage of Polybius (V.72).
