Editor's Note
The Deyrulzafaran Monastery, also regarded as the religious centre of Turkey's Syriac Christians, served continuously as the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate for 640 years, from 1293 to 1932. The monastery has no construction inscription; its oldest known structure is the Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 6th century. The Mor Hanonya Church was later added in 793. From these, it is thought that the monastery was built between the 6th and 8th centuries. Built with cut stone, smoothly dressed cut stone and rubble stone, the monastery was constructed over a wide area in three terraced storeys.
