Mardin was founded in southeastern Turkey, on the Syrian border, on a site commanding the Mesopotamian Plain. It lies within the "Fertile Crescent" region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Home to unique religious and traditional buildings of a stone architecture born from the interaction of nature and humankind, Mardin, with its medieval townscape, is being proposed as a "cultural landscape" for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
