Editor's Note
Built in honour of Mor Behnam and his sister Saro and now known as the Church of the Forty (Kirklar Church), the church takes both its names from early Christian legends and is a structure dating from the mid-6th century. The ceiling, carried by arches set on 12 massive columns running east-west, is built of finely cut stone. After it became the seat of the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Mardin in 1293, the people's spiritual and administrative affairs began to be managed from this church. At the Kirklar Church, patriarchs and metropolitans formerly resided in rooms with finely cut stone ceilings in the church courtyard.
