Editor's Note
The Old Church of John the Baptist, built in AD 457 by Bishop Nona, was rebuilt from its foundations, and in its place the Surp Asdvadzadzin (Mother Mary) Armenian Church was constructed in 1849-1851. Being the largest church in the region, it was also referred to as a cathedral. The building remained in ruins for many years and for a time served as a power station; it was restored in 1993 and converted into a mosque in 1994. The windows in the structure were opened later for lighting. Its columns bear dragon reliefs.
