Editor's Note
Ottoman archive documents note that there were two Armenian orphanages in Urfa opened without a license on behalf of American Protestant missionaries. This building is thought to be one of those orphanages, whose founding date Gülbadi Alan gives as 1889. Run by the American woman missionary Mary Caroline Holmes, the orphanage was used during the War of Independence as a shelter for French soldiers, and in the late 1920s as a Military Hospital and a Trachoma Hospital.
