Samosata was an ancient city founded on the western bank of the Euphrates, at the former site of present-day Samsat in Adıyaman. Although its population was predominantly Syriac-speaking, Hellenistic culture played an important role in the city. Its original settlement site is now inaccessible, having been submerged beneath the waters of the later-built Atatürk Dam.
