The Octagonal Roman Temple (Dikmeler) is said to have been built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in memory of his beloved, who drowned in the Nile. Built of cut basalt stone as a two-story structure on 14 piers, the temple was converted into a church in the Byzantine period and was destroyed during Timur's conquest of the city.
