It is most likely Roman in origin and was repaired during the Byzantine, Arab, Seljuk, and Dulkadirid Beylik periods, as well as in Ottoman times. The castle was built so as to overlook Göynük Castle. In the 1892 Aleppo yearbook (salname), it is described as follows: "There is a famous castle ruin overlooking the Aksu Stream, known as Köroğlu Castle." Köroğlu Castle is a fairly large structure, roughly 35 by 230 meters in size. It sits in a fitting position given the terrain, on the highest hilltop. Its walls are built of roughly dressed stone, lime mortar, and rubble.
