Editor's Note
We understand that work on the factory was begun in 1853 by Mr. Gold, a Levantine of English origin, and that it started operating during and around the years of the American Civil War. Later, under the leadership of the 'Whittall' company, the factory was overhauled and brought back into production in 1910 by 'The Mersyna Oil and Cake Mill Co. Ltd.' (the Mersin Oil and Pulp Factory Ltd.). We understand that Whittall operated this factory for many years.
