The original mosque is thought to have been built in the 14th century, directly opposite Hadrian's Gate in the historic city centre. Having fallen into ruin over time, the building was completely rebuilt between 1992 and 2003 to the design of the renowned Antalya-born Turkish architect Turgut Cansever. The mosque is especially significant as the only mosque Cansever ever designed and his only architectural work in his hometown.
