Editor's Note
Harran Castle (Harran Citadel) is a castle ruin in Harran, Şanlıurfa. Most of the present structure dates to the Ayyubid period around 1200, but the castle is substantially older and appears to have been built as a palace during Byzantine rule (4th-7th centuries). Though rectangular in plan, it was nicknamed al-Mudawwar ("the round one") in the Middle Ages, a name thought to derive from its having been built atop the ruins of an earlier round building.
