Editor's Note
This building, which serves as a mosque, was a bastion of the Meydan Gate of the Birecik city walls. According to the inscriptions in the medallions on its façades, it was built in 1482 by the Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay. Surviving intact to the present day, each façade of the Alaburç has similar arrangements. Recently restored, the Ala Burç served for a time as the "Birecik Folk Museum." Because the district had too many museums and too few small mosques, it was assigned for use as a mosque.
