Editor's Note
The Yesemek Open-Air Museum lies on the southeastern slope of a hill near the village of Yesemek, 23 km from the Islahiye district of Gaziantep. This broad slope is covered with gray and purple-toned basalt rocks known as dolerite. Yesemek was first noticed in the 1890s by Felix von Luschan, who was conducting the Zincirli excavations. The first surveys and excavations were carried out by Bahadır Alkım between 1958 and 1961, uncovering around 200 sculptures. Yesemek is the largest known sculpture workshop of the ancient Near East.
