Editor's Note
Founded together with Aphrodisias, the city became an independent town, Pityussa, in the Roman period. The island city had close trade relations with Cyprus, Egypt, Aphrodisias, Komardias, Holmi and Seleukeia. The ancient city of Pityussa contains numerous water cisterns, Roman-period houses, sarcophagi, baths and Byzantine-period church ruins. Sadly, the materials of the architectural remains, which are concentrated mostly on the northwestern side of the island and along the shore, have been stripped away by people today and carried off by boat to be used as building material in their own structures.
