Editor's Note
The harbour agora, with which the temple was also associated, lies entirely underwater today. In this area, which served as the heart of the city where the main street opened and where everyone arriving at Patara by sea first set foot, one of the most important epigraphic monuments known to ancient scholarship was uncovered: the Patara Road Monument (Monumentum Patarense, Miliarium Lyciae, Stadiasmus Patarensis). Erected in AD 46 with the approval of Quintus Veranius, Lycia's first Roman governor appointed by Emperor Claudius, the monument is an unrivalled source for the historical geography of Lycia and for Rome's policies of provincial organisation.
