Most likely destroyed in the 15th century, the lighthouse stood atop a rock at the southwest end of Patara Harbor Bay. Its ruins were brought to light through a difficult excavation in 2004-2005 from beneath an enormous sand dune. More than 2,500 building blocks of local limestone were lifted and sorted in the area nearby. Digital reconstruction work carried out with analyses and 3D scans revealed that almost all of the building elements, though damaged, have survived to the present day.
